NCCLS Announces Availability of New Guideline on Measurement of Free Thyroid Hormones
This document, Measurement of Free Thyroid Hormones; Approved Guideline (C45-A), is a guideline for free (nonprotein-bound) thyroid hormone (FTH) testing. The primary audience for this publication is personnel responsible for the development, manufacture, approval, and/or use of FTH measurement procedures. This guideline briefly discusses FTH measurement procedures with respect to design, factors confounding measurements, and specimen choice and collection, and addresses existing problems in definitions and specific nomenclature.

NCCLS Announces Availability of New Guideline on Protocols for Determination of Limits of Detection and Limits of Quantitation
This document, Protocols for Determination of Limits of Detection and Limits of Quantitation; Approved Guideline (EP17-A), provides protocols for determining the lower limit of detection of clinical laboratory methods, for verifying claimed limits, and for the proper use and interpretation of these limits. This document also provides guidance for determining lower limits of quantitation based on a laboratory’s goals for performance at low levels. This applies to all quantitative procedures, even if the reported result is qualitative. EP17-A is intended for use by clinical laboratories and by manufacturers of in vitro diagnostic tests.

This document, Studies to Evaluate Patient Outcomes; Approved Guideline (HS6-A), provides an overview of patient outcomes studies and health services research to assist healthcare providers, managers of healthcare services, and others in planning, conducting, and reporting patient outcomes research. This guideline describes the essential issues in planning outcomes research, including resources needed, formulating a research question, validity and sources of error, feasibility, and ethical issues; addresses the design and implementation of a patient outcomes research plan, including study design, study subjects, measurements, interventions, and analysis; summarizes recommendations for reporting patient outcomes research; and includes definitions, references, and resources for those interested in planning, conducting, and using patient outcomes research.

NCCLS Announces Availability of New Standard on Specification for Transferring Information Between Clinical Laboratory Instruments and Information Systems
This document, Specification for Transferring Information Between Clinical Laboratory Instruments and Information Systems; Approved Standard—Second Edition(LIS2-A2), addresses the two-way digital transmission of remote requests and results between clinical laboratory instruments and information systems. It enables any two such systems to establish a logical link for communicating text to send result, request, or demographic information in a standardized and interpretable form.
