Quality Practices in Noninstrumented, Near-Patient (CLIA-Waived) Testing: A Simplified Instructional Guideline; Selection Criteria for POCT Devices
The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute requests volunteers to serve as subcommittee members for two new voluntary consensus projects. The project descriptions and specific qualifications needed are provided below:
NEW PROJECT:
Quality Practices in Noninstrumented, Near-Patient (CLIA-Waived) Testing: A Simplified Instructional Guideline
Description:
This proposed guideline targets waived testing personnel and aims at minimizing error at the pre- and postanalytical phases through a framework of POCT processes geared to improve the quality of noninstrumented, waived testing. Using education (knowledge and awareness) as the core approach, this proposed guideline will address assessment, quality, and monitoring processes, putting the operator at the center stage of responsibility for patient outcome.
The audience would include point-of-care coordinators, nurses’ aides, patient care assistants, laboratory technical assistants, and laboratory directors.

NEW PROJECT:
Selection Criteria for POCT Devices
Description:
Increased robustness and integration capabilities to existing system networks have deemed point of care testing (POCT) devices as comprehensive patient care solutions expanding their demand beyond conventional healthcare institutions. The number of available device alternatives for any given analyte, coupled with the device’s analytical, operational, and connectivity attributes as well as associated potential risks can result in a complex selection process that can eclipse important factors unique to the facility.
This guideline will provide an overview of important considerations when comparing POCT devices and will include a draft checklist of criteria which users of the document can employ as a starting point for selecting a new device for clinical use.
The target audience and intended users would include hospital laboratories public health laboratories, point of care devices manufacturers, point of care coordinators, and laboratory directors.
