Operational Assessment in the POL

A renewed emphasis on assessing quality throughout the total testing process is under way.

CLIA '88 requirements were revised in 2003 to reflect an emphasis on quality as it related to the flow of a specimen through the clinical laboratory.The revisions relied heavily on the CLSI (formerly NCCLS) quality management system model for healthcare as well as that organization's laboratory-specific quality guidelines.COLA, which inspects and accredits primarily physician office laboratories (POLs), has recently revised its inspection criteria to include mandatory provisions for a CLSI-compliant quality management system (QMS).
