The goal of high-quality patient care in respiratory services is one that all related staff share. Understanding and defining the path of workflow through a particular respiratory service will go a long way toward helping map out the procedures and processes that will support quality patient care and reduce the potential for medical error. In addition, when a service’s processes are documented and understood by all staff, meeting governmental and accreditation requirements is seamless.

“Application of a Quality Management System Model for Respiratory Services; Approved Guideline – Second Edition” (HS4-A2), published by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI, formerly NCCLS) in May 2006, describes the respiratory services and diagnostics path of workflow and provides information for respiratory operations that will assist the services in improving their processes and meeting governmental and accreditation requirements.¹
