CLSI Term Sources

Where do terms used in CLSI documents come from?

It is a firm policy of CLSI to use internationally harmonized terms wherever possible.  Accordingly, CLSI has chosen the following priority for terms:

  1. VIM (1993) International Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology. A new draft version of VIM was released for comment in April 2004.  It remains under review, and so is not yet an approved source of terms and definitions for CLSI.
  2. ISO terms and definitions.
  3. CEN terms and definitions.
  4. Other internationally accepted terminology standards.
  5. Previous CLSI usage. Most terms and definitions are considered either conventional usage or are defined specifically for a particular document.  Some terms are borrowed from other CLSI documents in common use. The goal is to be as consistent and harmonized as possible across all CLSI disciplines.
