Executive Vice President's Message

Dear NCCLS/Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute Members and Friends:

My first week at NCCLS is now complete and I am absolutely delighted by the aptitude, commitment, and competence of our volunteer leadership and Executive Offices staff.

In particular, last Wednesday we held a retirement party for Dr. John V. Bergen, our esteemed Executive Vice President for 23 years.  In attendance were more than 100 people comprising a virtual hall-of-fame group from the professional scientific, clinical, and standards-developing communities from around the world. 

During the honoring speeches and good natured barbs, I was struck by the thought that the development of standards and guidelines for the clinical and laboratory community is “what we do,” but it is not “who we are.”  The true measures of NCCLS’s success throughout our 35-year history can be measured by the integrity, pride, camaraderie, and genuine friendships that have been forged by the literally thousands of committed volunteers and members that we have come to know.

Our impending name change to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) on 1 January is a great reflection of the reality of the growth of our organization in defining “what we do”; it would be far more difficult to capture into words the profound definition of “who we are.”
