Glen A. Fine Named New Executive Vice President of NCCLS/Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute

Wayne, PA – Dr. Thomas L. Hearn, NCCLS President, has announced the appointment of Glen A. Fine, M.T.(ASCP), M.S., M.B.A, as the organization’s next Executive Vice President, succeeding John V. Bergen, Ph.D.  Mr. Fine will join NCCLS on 1 November. 

Mr. Fine is currently Vice President, Ethics, Regulatory Compliance, and Privacy, for MDS Laboratories, U.S., Inc. in Brentwood, TN.  He previously served as the Vice President, Operations for MDS; as General Manager of MDS Hudson Valley Laboratories; as Administrative Director, Laboratory at Paoli Memorial Hospital in Paoli, Pennsylvania; and as Assistant Administrator of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Fine’s educational background includes a Master of Business Administration degree in Health Care Administration from St. Joseph’s University and a Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

As Executive Vice President and chief staff officer, Mr. Fine will have overall responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, administrative, marketing, and financial management operations of the organization; for communicating the organization’s vision and objectives to its internal and external constituencies; and for providing leadership to the Board of Directors and staff in formulating policy, developing strategy, and implementing programs.

Mr. Fine takes on this NCCLS leadership role at an exciting time in its history. On 1 January 2005, NCCLS will officially change its name, becoming the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The new name best reflects the organization’s mission to the healthcare community, depth and breadth of standards-development activities, and global membership base.

Commenting on his new role, Mr. Fine said “I am very excited to join NCCLS, an organization which enjoys an outstanding reputation for quality in all of its products and services.  With the upcoming name change to CLSI, to reflect an ambitious growth agenda beyond its traditional boundaries, I am delighted to be part of the organization at such an exciting time in its history.”

Selection of Mr. Fine, from among many highly qualified candidates, successfully completes a year-long search. The Search Committee was chaired by Dr. Hearn (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The committee’s members included Dr. Donna M. Meyer (CHRISTUS Health), Immediate Past President; Wayne Brinster (BD) and Dr. Mary Lou Gantzer (Dade Behring), both members of the Board of Directors; and James A. Thomas, President of ASTM International.

According to Dr. Hearn, “Mr. Fine and NCCLS is a very good match!  Mr. Fine’s experience in management, marketing, and finance, and his results-oriented approach and style bode well for NCCLS.  I am confident that with his leadership NCCLS will become even more prominent as the world’s finest clinical and laboratory standards-development organization.  NCCLS has had tremendous growth, masterfully guided by Dr. John Bergen, NCCLS’s outgoing Executive Vice President.  I know Mr. Fine welcomes the challenges in moving NCCLS to even higher levels.”

Dr. Bergen, who has served as Executive Director and, more recently, Executive Vice President, will retire on 31 December, after 23 years of outstanding service.
